On the surface: Wool, Natural. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Classic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is blue in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Turquoise held between midnight blue and a yellow border
Turquoise and midnight blue run into each other through the center and the borders answer them in yellow and a warm red-brown: Turquoise Anatolian Hand-Knotted Pure Silk Rug — 84 × 125 cm (2'9" × 4'1"), knotted in Türkiye in silk alone, symmetrical in its drawing, with fringes at both ends.
A single piece. Turquoise is a difficult color in a rug and it works here because it is never left alone. The midnight blue keeps it from going sweet, the yellow in the border keeps it from going cold, and the red-brown grounds the whole arrangement.
The pile catches light along its lay, so the turquoise comes up bright from one direction and goes nearly gray from the other, and the pattern appears to lift and settle again as you walk past it. It was knotted by hand in Türkiye from silk yarn only, which is what allows drawing this fine at a size this small. Rugs of this kind are often laid on a table or hung on a wall rather than walked on, and that is a reasonable thing to do with this one.
Keep it away from direct sun or the color will go. Cleaning is a job for someone who handles silk, not a domestic one. It is a single piece, and it was not made as part of a run. Knotted by hand in Türkiye from silk yarn and nothing else. Turquoise and midnight blue at the center; yellow and red-brown in the borders. Symmetrical drawing, with fringes finished at both ends. 84 × 125 cm — table, wall or a small stretch of floor. Bright from one direction and gray from the other, along the lay of the pile. Direct sunlight will fade it; keep it out of a south window. Cleaning by someone who handles silk. Hang it and it stops being a rug; walk on it and it stops being a picture.
Either use is defensible.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
