01The tone of the ground

04From the hand of the weaver

The weave is set at eight knots across and eight down in each centimeter, which is what lets a gold outline keep an even width around a curve and lets small passages of green and beige register as colors rather than as flecks. Why are pure silk rugs harder to find than they were? Fewer looms are set for silk each year, and a single piece of this size takes eight to fourteen months of weaving. Silk is also the most expensive fiber in textiles, so the number of workshops still weaving an all-silk pile keeps falling.
