01Where the Medallion comes from

The forms run in a continuous flow through the center rather than resolving into a medallion. Then the border reverses the temperature, blue and cream against a warm ground, and that reversal is what keeps the rug from going heavy.

02What the yarn is

Under lamplight the burgundy deepens almost to brown and the blue in the border becomes the only cool thing left in the room. Chinese silk, densely knotted, with no cotton in the structure at all.

03The mark of slow weaving

The Chinese silk-weaving tradition is one of the few that has run long enough without interruption to keep this knot density in production, and the density is what allows drawing this fine. A pure-silk rug is soft to the hand and firm to the eye, and it is also the most delicate floor covering anyone makes, so it belongs in a formal room rather than a family one.
