Zeminde ne var

Berceste Serisi Uşak Desenli Mavi Yün Halı, soluk deniz mavisi bir zemin üzerinde iri palmet ve çiçek motiflerinin uçtan uca sıralanmasıyla kurulur. Motifler krem ve kırık beyaz tonundadır; zeminle aralarındaki kontrast bilinçli olarak düşük tutulmuş, desen yıkanmış gibi görünmektedir. Zemini saran geniş krem bordür rozet dizileriyle bezelidir ve içeriden ince bir su çizgisiyle ayrılır. Uzun ve dar bir yüzeyde madalyon kurulamaz; bu yüzden desen merkezden değil, tekrardan doğar — motif dizisi halının boyu boyunca sürer ve nerede başlayıp bittiği belli olmaz.

Yün, makine dokuma halılarda sık kullanılan bir yüzey ipliği değildir; sentetik ipliklere göre ışığı daha az yansıtır ve rengi daha mat gösterir. Bu halının solgun görünümünün bir sebebi budur — desen soluk basıldığı için değil, yünün rengi tok ve mat taşıması yüzünden. Pamuk ise çözgü ve iskelet tarafında yapıyı toplar. Uzun ve dar formatta dokumanın bir başka zorluğu, desenin üç metre boyunca aynı aralıkla tekrar etmesidir: aralık kaydığında hata halının ortasında değil, iki ucu karşılaştırıldığında ortaya çıkar.

Full description

A medallion drawn in the Oushak manner runs the length of this one — the large, open, floral-geometric style that came out of western Anatolia in the fifteenth century — set here in blue on a runner 101 × 320 cm (3'4" × 10'6"). Machine-woven in Türkiye from wool and cotton, in the Berceste Series. One runner at this length.

Oushak medallions are drawn big and given room, which is the opposite of what a Persian city rug does with the same idea, and on a runner that generosity is useful: a narrow rug crowded with small pattern turns into wallpaper underfoot. Blue is not the historical palette — the old Oushak register was madder and gold — so taking the drawing into blue keeps the form and drops the antique association, which lets the rug sit in a modern hall without arguing with it.

Machine-woven, and the house would rather say it than borrow the language of hand work. Wool over the surface and cotton underneath it: the cotton keeps a three-meter runner straight, which is the hardest thing to ask of any long rug, and the wool takes the traffic. What a loom gives you is exactness — the medallion at the far end is the same as the one at the door. What it does not give you is the drift and the abrash of a village piece, and if that drift is the thing you want, the hand-knotted pieces are where to look. Professional washing.

Is a machine-woven wool rug still a wool rug?

Yes. The loom decides how a rug is built, not what it is built from. This runner has a wool face over cotton, the same fibers a hand-knotted rug uses, and it wears and cleans as wool does. What machine weaving changes is the regularity of the drawing and the hours behind it.

What makes a pattern an Oushak?

Uşak, spelled Oushak in English, is a town in the west of Anatolia, and the name describes a way of drawing: large medallions, floral forms simplified into geometry, and generous empty ground between them. The style dates from the fifteenth century and has been copied everywhere since, in every fiber and on every kind of loom.

A corridor shows a rug end-on instead of from above, which no other room does, and a medallion repeat is what that view was made for.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
