Red Floral Machine-Woven Silk and Viscose Rug: a brick-coral red ground with a round medallion at its center, the whole field filled with fine flowering scrollwork in cream, green and blue, made on a mechanical loom in Türkiye from silk and viscose yarn. There is almost no empty ground anywhere on it. In the classical rug tradition that density is a statement about the loom rather than about taste — a field is left open when the weave is not fine enough to carry detail, and it is filled when the weave is. Here the flowers run right to the border, which is wide and layered and repeats the same floral vocabulary at a larger scale, and a plain red band closes the whole thing at the outer edge.

Silk and viscose together are what make the red look deep rather than flat. Both fibers reflect, so a single dyed color arrives on the surface in two brightnesses depending on which yarn carries it, and the eye reads that as depth. Filling a saturated ground with pale motifs is also a contrast problem: if cream and green do not separate far enough from the red, the drawing dissolves into one surface. That it does not dissolve is the visible evidence that palette and weave density were worked out against each other. What will happen with time is that direct sun opens the red, so rotate it annually and keep it clear of a south-facing window where that is possible.
