Multicolor Handwoven Wool Bahçecik Village Kilim

Begin with what it will not do. At 100 × 180 cm (3'3" × 5'11") and with no pile whatsoever, this kilim will not soften a floor or quiet a room. What it does instead is carry the drawing of Bahçecik village weaving in wool, in colors nobody matched to each other, on a piece the house keeps with its older stock. Village color works by collision rather than by scheme.

01After the color

Reds sit next to greens, a strip of white cuts across both, and the effect at a distance is not chaos but a kind of hum. Look closer and the figures resolve into the small hooked and stepped shapes Anatolian weavers have carried in memory for centuries, each one drawn slightly differently from the last because there was no cartoon to copy and no reason to want one. All wool, woven flat, on a loom in a house rather than in a shed with a foreman.

Its weight is the honest limitation: a kilim of this build is light, which makes it easy to lift, shake out and hang, and equally easy to rumple under a chair leg. Under a coffee table it will behave; under a dining chair it will not.

Have it washed professionally rather than sponged at home. Handwoven in wool at Bahçecik, in Türkiye. Flat-woven — no pile, and the same drawing on both faces. Hooked and stepped Anatolian figures, each one slightly different. 100 × 180 cm (3'3" × 5'11"). Light and easy to move; rumples under a chair that gets pushed back. Professional cleaning. Held among the house's older and rarer pieces. Hang it and it becomes a picture; lay it down and it becomes furniture, and it is genuinely better at one of those than the other.
