Wool ages over the years by settling into its place rather than by losing its shine. Used, it softens rather than hardens.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Burdur cicim in wool: orange leading, green and red behind
It was folded in a chest for decades and barely walked on. A handwoven wool kilim from Burdur in southwestern Anatolia, worked in the cicim technique, 114 × 161 cm (3'9" × 5'3"), in orange, green and red.
Cicim is flatweaving with extra threads laid in over the ground, so the motifs sit slightly proud of the surface. Orange leads and the green and red answer it, giving the piece an energy older kilims usually have had washed out of them.
The motifs follow the traditional Burdur drawing, raised above the flat ground by the cicim threads so their edges catch light and throw a small shadow. None of the colors has gone soft with age, because this kilim spent its whole life away from the light. Woven entirely in wool, by hand, in the Burdur district. In Turkish a piece kept like this is called sandık eskisi, chest-old: made, put away, and taken out again looking close to new.
There is no wear to point at, and the trade-off runs the opposite way to the usual one, since what it lacks is the softening that use gives a kilim. Send it to a professional rather than washing it at home. Handwoven in Burdur, southwestern Anatolia, in wool throughout. Cicim technique: supplementary threads laid over the flatweave so motifs stand slightly raised. Orange, green and red, none of them faded. Kept folded in a chest instead of used, which is why the colors held. 114 × 161 cm (3'9" × 5'3") — an entryway, a kitchen, or beside a desk. Thin, firm and light; it wants a pad on a polished floor. Professional washing. The colors are the ones the weaver chose rather than the ones fifty years of sun would have left, and that is unusual enough to be the reason to own it.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
