The story of this rug

The Yağcıbedir has a geographical indication, which means the name is tied by law to where it is woven. This is one: 91 × 152 cm (3'0" × 5'0"), hand-knotted wool on a wool foundation, a navy ground with red geometric motifs and small quantities of white and cream.

01The memory of a region

One piece. The tradition began with the Yörük Türkmen herders of the Taurus range and settled, over generations, around Sındırgı in Balıkesir, which is the district the indication now covers.

02Color that shifts through the day

Its navy is the blue of a night sky rather than a dyed color — dense, and dark enough that the red figures on it look lit rather than painted. White and cream appear only where the composition needs air.

The drawing itself has been handed down unaltered for centuries: sharp-edged geometry, symbolic figures, nothing decorative that does not also mean something. Wool throughout — pile and foundation both — and nothing else spun into it.

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
