Oushak Eşme Village Handwoven Wool Kilim

Eşme is a district of Uşak in western Anatolia and its household looms are the source of this piece: an Oushak Eşme handwoven wool kilim, made throughout in wool, carrying a prayer-rug composition with natural greens at its center. It is a genuine village weaving rather than a workshop reproduction, and there is only one of it. A prayer kilim is drawn to point. The composition has a top and a bottom and is not symmetrical the way a field rug is, which is what a seccade layout means.

01Which tone on the ground

Here the middle is held by the greens, with the rest of the palette running around them in the colors an Eşme weaver would have had within reach. Nothing is machine-regular: rows drift, edges are not ruled, and the tone jumps slightly where one dye lot gave out and another began. It is flat-woven — no pile at all, the pattern made by weft passing over and under warp — in wool from end to end.

02Knot by knot, by hand

The Turkish description makes a point of this: it was not made to a schedule, but worked slowly, row by row, in the way a household weaves rather than a factory. Two practical things follow from a flat weave. Being thin, it slides on a bare floor unless an underlay goes beneath it, and it is not the piece to put where a dining chair is pushed back and forth.

03The geography of the weave

The wash is specialist work. Handwoven in Eşme, in the Uşak region of western Türkiye. Wool throughout, flat-woven with no pile. A prayer-rug composition, directional, with greens holding the center. Village weaving: drifting rows, unruled edges, dye lots that do not match. Thin enough to need an underlay on a hard floor. Not suited to a spot where chairs are dragged. Specialist washing; a single piece, hard to match. Village kilims were woven for use before they were woven for sale, and this one still reads as an object somebody made for their own floor.
