Black Damask Patchwork Cowhide Rug

Damask started life as a woven silk figure — a scrolling, symmetrical repeat named after Damascus — and on this piece it has been cut out of hide instead. A black patchwork cowhide rug, 89 × 150 cm (2'11" × 4'11"), assembled from South American cattle hide and joined flat. There is one of it. The figure is built, never printed. Panels of black hide carry the scroll and warmer brown and tan pieces fill in around it, so what reads as a single motif is a dozen separate cuts butted edge to edge.

Each panel keeps the direction its hair grew in, which means the black refuses to sit still: dense and matt from the doorway, faintly bronzed along one axis from the far side of the room. That movement is the reason to put hide on a floor at all. The hides are sorted by tone before anything is cut, then trimmed with shears and sewn panel to panel until the piece holds a true rectangle. There is no pile — the surface is skin, and it behaves like skin.

01The rule of care

Water is the wrong treatment: dry cleaning, and blotting rather than rubbing if something lands on it. At 89 × 150 cm this is a small rug, better in front of a chair or along the foot of a bed than adrift in the middle of a floor. Why is a hide rug made as patchwork? A single hide arrives in the shape of the animal, so it cannot be a rectangle or a chosen color.

02The origin of the pattern

Cutting hides into panels and joining them lets the maker set the size, square the edges and build a figure such as damask out of tonal pieces. Can a cowhide rug be washed? No. Hide stiffens and warps when it is soaked, so wet washing is the one thing to avoid. Wipe it down for everyday marks, blot anything spilled instead of rubbing it, and send it to a dry cleaner when it needs more than that.
