How a pieced cowhide rug is made

Two things separate a well-made piece from a poor one, and both are visible from standing height in a photograph. The panels should be even in thickness across the whole rug, and the stitch line should hold straight across a seam instead of wandering. Look for them before you buy.

Panels, not a whole hide

Where a cowhide rug earns its place

In rooms where a pile is a liability. Hide has no pile for a spill to sink into and no fiber for grit to bed down in, which decides most of the cases for and against it.

It is not washed like a woven rug

This is the sentence to remember: a hide rug is wiped, never soaked. The product records for this collection specify dry cleaning, and the reason is structural rather than cosmetic. Water that reaches the backing sits between the leather and the fabric, swells the stitch holes and slackens the seams; a tanned hide that is soaked and then dried also stiffens and can crack along the fold.

• Routine. Shake it out or vacuum in the direction the hair lies, with the beater bar off. Sweeping against the lie roughs up the surface.
• Spills. Blot immediately, then wipe with a barely damp cloth and a cleaner made for leather. Do not rub — rubbing drives liquid into the seam.
• Conditioning. Feed the hide with a leather conditioner from time to time so it stays supple. A dried-out hide cracks where it is walked over.
• Never. No machine wash, no soaking, no steam cleaner, no beating the rug over a rail — a hide rug carries its load in its stitching, and beating it stretches the seams open.
• Light. Keep it out of long direct sun. The dark markings fade before the pale ones do, which flattens the composition unevenly.
• Periodically. Once or twice a year, hand it to a cleaner who works with hide rather than to a rug washer.
