02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Natural yarn

On the surface: Natural, Wool. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.

02

Classic pattern

Classic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is purple.

03

7-size series

Woven in 7 sizes, from 90 × 150 cm to 265 × 355 cm. The most chosen sizes are living-room and sitting-room sizes.

04

India workshop

This rug is woven in India. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.

Cream and Purple Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Rug, Safir Series — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

Oushak is a weaving town in western Anatolia whose big, loose floral drawing has been copied for four hundred years, and this is that drawing carried in cream and purple on a hand-knotted rug from India.

01How it feels underfoot

Wool, cotton and bamboo viscose in the surface, a cotton foundation underneath, and a knot count fine enough to hold the small scrollwork. The largest piece measures 265 × 355 cm (8'8" × 11'8"). Cream holds the ground and the purple does the drawing — palmettes, hooked leaves and a scrolling vine that runs the border without quite repeating.

02From the hand of the weaver

What separates it from a printed version is the relief: after the rug comes off the loom a weaver cuts around every motif with hand shears, dropping the ground a few millimeters so the pattern stands up off it.

03Underfoot

Run a hand across the surface and you can feel where the outline is before you can see it. Bamboo viscose in the motifs takes light the way silk does, which is why the purple reads violet from one end of a room and near-plum from the other. Knotted by hand in India.

04The tone of the ground

The shine that makes the pattern legible also picks up footmarks, and on a cream ground they will show until the pile is brushed back the other way — worth knowing before this goes in a hallway.

05The mark of slow weaving

Seven sizes exist, from a small mat up to the salon piece, and two of them are proper corridor runners rather than rugs cut short. What does carving mean on a hand-knotted rug? Carving is a finishing operation.

06Reading the motif

After weaving, a worker trims the pile along the outline of each motif with hand shears, so the ground sits lower than the pattern. The result is a relief you can feel with a palm, and it is done piece by piece rather than by machine. Does an Oushak-pattern rug have to come from Oushak? No. Oushak names both a town in western Anatolia and the family of large-scale floral and medallion drawings that came out of it from the sixteenth century onward. This rug carries the Oushak pattern and was hand-knotted in India, which the description states rather than hides. Hand-knotted in India, with the pattern carved by hand after weaving. Wool, cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose in the surface, on a cotton foundation. Cream ground with purple palmettes, hooked leaves and a scrolling vine border. Dense knotting, which is what lets the small scrollwork stay readable. Seven sizes from 90 × 150 cm to 265 × 355 cm, including two long runners. The bamboo viscose shines, and shine shows footmarks. Professional washing only. Cream grounds get lighter with washing and purple gets quieter with light, so in twenty years it will be a paler rug than the one that arrives. This rug belongs to the Safir Series.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

09

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
