Knotted by hand
Every knot in this rug is tied by hand; instead of the exact repetition of a machine loom you get the slight differences the hand leaves behind. No two areas come out the same.

Silk fiber is markedly finer than wool and lets extra knots fit into the same area. Even the smallest motif reads with its edges intact.
Classic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a brown ground.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

This is a thinner rug than most people expect a hand-knotted one to be, and it should be said before anything else. Brown Vintage-Pattern Hand-Knotted Silk and Wool Rug, Ayan Series — wool, cotton and silk tied on the double knot in Pakistan, 247 × 287 cm (8'1" × 9'5"), a brown vintage field with turquoise surfacing through it. One of one. Thinness is not weakness here. The double knot is what allows a fine weave to hold up, and the trade is a firm, taut surface in place of a plush one — if you want something to sink into, this is not it; if you want a rug that stays flat under a door and under chair legs, it is.
The pattern has the softened look of a design that has spent a long time in a room. Small passages of turquoise and cyan turn up against the brown where you do not expect them, and the silk in the yarn makes them come and go with the angle you are standing at. Nearly square, and 247 × 287 cm is a good deal of floor, so it settles a large sitting room laid on light or natural oak.
Cream linen sofas, a travertine coffee table and a pale walnut cabinet read the brown as a continuation rather than a contrast, while the turquoise gives you something to echo in ceramics, glass or a cushion.
A vintage field is quiet enough not to compete with large paintings, a stone wall or a slatted timber unit; it gathers them instead. Under a table for eight the composition survives the chairs being pulled out. Ayan designs are drawn for this house alone.
Washing goes to a professional. Made by hand in Pakistan by experienced weavers, on the double knot. Wool, cotton and silk in a fine, tightly packed weave. Thinner and firmer than a plush rug — a deliberate choice, not a shortfall. Brown vintage field with turquoise and cyan appearing through it. 247 × 287 cm (8'1" × 9'5") — nearly square, for a wide salon or a dining floor. Silk lifts the cool tones as the viewing angle changes. Designs drawn for Halıcızade; a single piece. Professional washing. Brown floors look permanent, and the turquoise is the only reason this one does not also look solemn.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
