Thinness is not weakness here. The double knot is what allows a fine weave to hold up, and the trade is a firm, taut surface in place of a plush one — if you want something to sink into, this is not it; if you want a rug that stays flat under a door and under chair legs, it is. The pattern has the softened look of a design that has spent a long time in a room. Small passages of turquoise and cyan turn up against the brown where you do not expect them, and the silk in the yarn makes them come and go with the angle you are standing at.

Nearly square, and 247 × 287 cm is a good deal of floor, so it settles a large sitting room laid on light or natural oak. Cream linen sofas, a travertine coffee table and a pale walnut cabinet read the brown as a continuation rather than a contrast, while the turquoise gives you something to echo in ceramics, glass or a cushion.
