Burgundy Hand-Knotted Wool Baloch Herat Rug, 70+ Years Old

Seventy years and more have already gone over it: a hand-knotted Baloch rug from the Herat region of western Afghanistan, 126 × 185 cm (4'2" × 6'1"), wool throughout, burgundy, carrying the small close drawing the Baloch weave is known for. The trade would file that age as semi-antique. There is one of it. Baloch rugs are small by habit, dark by preference and tight by construction.

01Color, by the light

The palette holds at the deep end — oxblood and wine, aubergine, a blue that goes nearly to black — with undyed ivory used sparingly to draw an outline and make the rest readable. The field is filled rather than composed, a unit repeated until it runs out of room, and borders close it on all four sides.

02What the yarn is

Seven decades of use have taken the newness out of the wool, and the pile now has the low sheen that only walking produces. Wool does both jobs here, pile above and warp and weft below, which is the older way of building a rug and the reason it drapes instead of lying board-flat.

03A line from the archive

Age brings consequences worth stating plainly: the ends and the sides go first on a rug this old, and a piece of this vintage has almost certainly been repaired somewhere by somebody. The age words are trade usage and not certification — antique is a hundred years or more, semi-antique fifty to a hundred, and no authority issues either.

04Coming off the loom

Cleaning belongs to somebody who handles old rugs, not to a general service. Hand-knotted by Baloch weavers in the Herat region of western Afghanistan. Wool and nothing else: the pile and the structure under it are both wool. Burgundy ground with a dense small-scale repeat and full borders. 126 × 185 cm (4'2" × 6'1"). Over seventy years old, which the trade calls semi-antique; no body certifies that. Expect wear at the ends and sides, and old repairs somewhere in it. Cleaning by a specialist in old rugs.
