The story of this rug

Past seventy years old: a Baloch rug, 126 × 185 cm (4'2" × 6'1"), about 2.3 square meters (25 square feet), in wool, hand-knotted in Afghanistan. Baloch weavings are known for dark palettes: deep red, navy and brown lead, and light colors are used sparingly.

01Color, by the light

The Herat in the title gives the pattern family and its trade name. The field is divided into small rectangular cells set in five columns; each holds a black and brown diamond with small cream and orange marks inside. Several borders of orange and red diamond chains run around it. At both short ends, before the fringe, wide panels carry three rows of small rectangles, each with a cream diamond. The whole rug sits at the dark end of red: burgundy, brown and black are near neighbors, and small points of orange and cream keep the pattern legible. For a rug past seventy, the right place is one with little traffic: in front of a desk in a study, or a reading corner.

02The tone of the ground

A dark palette stands out on a pale floor; light oak or lime-white stone draws its edges clearly. A cognac leather chair and a brass lamp stay in the same warm depth. The fringe is salmon-colored, and the long sides finish in a dark overcast.

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
