The direction of a hand-tied pile is never exactly the same across the whole rug, and light breaks differently in each area. The rug reads in two tones from its two ends.
The outer surface of wool fiber holds liquid out for a while and a stain does not reach the base of the pile at once. Treated immediately, it leaves no mark.
Classic, Authentic pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is burgundy, red.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Navy keeps the burgundy company, 196 × 300 cm
196 × 300 cm (6'5" × 9'10") is the size that takes a media wall and a seating group and makes one composition out of them. Burgundy and Navy Afghan Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Khamyap — a deep burgundy ground balanced by navy detail, carrying Turkmen motifs handed down unchanged, knotted by hand in Afghanistan.
One of one. Navy is what keeps the burgundy from being the only idea in the rug. The two are old companions in this tradition and they hold each other in check, so the field has depth without going heavy. With beige walls, linen curtains and brass fittings the burgundy warms; in a salon built around a natural stone or travertine table the Afghan drawing gives the room a character the furniture is not supplying. In a large entrance hall, or a salon reached through double doors, it is among the first things anyone takes in.
In front of a fireplace, or under a solid timber dining table, the traditional side of it comes forward. Wool makes the entire surface. Cotton makes most of the structure, with a low proportion of recycled synthetic yarn added for durability.
Medium knot density places Khamyap where it sits — a hand-knotted Afghan rug within reach of people the finer weaves are not, and long-lived on its own terms. Since the design lives in the weaver's memory rather than on paper, small motif differences run through every piece.
The furniture around it will be replaced several times. Professional washing. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan, in the Turkmen tradition. Deep burgundy with navy detail balancing it. Wool surface over a mostly cotton spine, with a low proportion of recycled synthetic yarn. 196 × 300 cm (6'5" × 9'10") — a media wall and seating group together, or a grand hall. Medium knot density, and long-lived at it. Warms beside beige walls, linen and brass; sharpens against stone and travertine. Design carried in memory, so motifs differ from piece to piece. Professional washing. It is what a minimally furnished house buys when it decides it would like a past.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
