Classic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is turquoise, burgundy in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
A nightingale's eye repeated on navy, wool over cotton
Çeşm-i bülbül means the eye of the nightingale, and it is the name of the drawing on this hand-knotted rug — a Hereke pattern on a navy wool ground, 126 × 178 cm (4'2" × 5'10"), woven in Türkiye over a cotton foundation. Second-hand: it had a life on a floor before this one.
Framed and floral, with burgundy and orange running through the drawing. The name belongs first to Ottoman glass, where çeşm-i bülbül describes a spiraling stripe worked into the body of a vessel, and it moved across to weaving for a pattern of the same character — small repeated eyes drawn tight enough that the field shimmers rather than reads.
On a navy ground with burgundy and orange in the motifs, that shimmer is what the rug is for. Hereke drawing generally refuses empty space, which is only possible at a high knot count, and it is the reason the name carries the weight it does. Wool takes the pile and cotton takes the warp and weft, the combination that lets a fine drawing hold its lines without the foundation giving. Being used, the rug arrives with the pile settled and the surface carrying the low sheen that walking produces and no finishing process reproduces.
Against that: pile height varies where wear varied, the ends show handling, and colors have moved a shade. Every second-hand rug should be professionally washed before it is laid, and this one is no exception. Hand-knotted in Türkiye; wool pile on a cotton foundation. Çeşm-i Bülbül drawing — the eye of the nightingale, a dense repeating eye motif. Navy ground with burgundy and orange in the motifs, inside a framing border. Hereke drawing leaves no empty ground, which requires a high knot count. 126 × 178 cm (4'2" × 5'10"), roughly 2.2 square meters. Second-hand: settled pile, low sheen, uneven pile height and handled ends. Professional washing before use.
A single piece. A rug named after a bird's eye ought to reward being looked at closely, and this one repays it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
