Multicolor Authentic-Pattern Handwoven Wool Kilim Floor Cushion

In the weaving villages of Afghanistan, on the same looms that make the rugs: a handwoven kilim floor cushion, 50 × 50 cm (1'8" × 1'8"), with a wool face on a cotton foundation and a pattern of oranges, blues and greens taken from Anatolian and Central Asian sources. A kilim is flat-woven — no pile, no knots, only weft packed over warp. Flatweave shows its drawing on both faces, so the colors are as strong on the underside as on the top.

01Color, by the light

The oranges carry the piece and the blues cool it; the greens sit between them and stop the two from clashing. At half a meter square it is small enough that the pattern reads as a single motif rather than as a field, which is why these squares work stacked, or set on a bench, or dropped on a floor beside something low. Wool makes the whole visible surface.

02What the yarn is

Cotton threads run through the foundation to strengthen it, which is what allows a piece this small to keep its shape while being sat on. It was woven entirely by hand, in villages where the skill is generations old. It can serve as a floor cushion, a cover for a bench, or a seat pad on a hard chair.
