Modern pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is gray in the ground.
This rug is woven in India. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Diagonals gathering inward, a plain frame, mostly polyester
Woven by hand in India from a blend that is three-quarters polyester, a tenth wool and the rest cotton: a gray rug with a fine geometric drawing, 1,700 g/m², a 10 mm pile, and a surface as firm as matting.
The gray drifts naturally between tones rather than holding one flat value. Diagonal lines gather toward the middle of the field and a plain outer frame closes it off — enough structure to be read as a pattern, not enough to be busy.
Nothing here is soft-focus: the drawing has edges and the weave is tight enough to hold them. The tone is a working gray, neither warm nor cold, which is why it goes as easily into a conservatory or a kitchen as into a study or the floor in front of a bookcase.
In a modern room it steadies things; in an ethnic one it fills in behind the pattern. The blend is what makes it behave the way it does. Wool at a tenth of the content gives the surface its hand, polyester gives it the resilience, and cotton does the structural work. At 1,700 g/m² it is light for its thickness, so one person can lift it, roll it and carry it outside. The pile does not flatten under a footstep and the rug does not slide about underfoot.
If what you want is the deep give of a heavy wool rug, this is not that — it is firm, and the firmness is the point of it. Handwoven in India by traditional methods. 75% polyester, 10% wool, 15% cotton. 1,700 g/m² — light enough to lift and carry alone. A 10 mm pile on a tight, firm ground. Fine geometric lines drawn diagonally, held inside a plain border. A neutral gray, with natural tonal drift across the field. Firm rather than plush; footsteps leave no mark in it. Suits offices, studies, conservatories and kitchens. Regular vacuuming, and professional washing beyond that. This is what you choose after deciding you would rather not think about the floor again for ten years.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
