Cream Frame-Pattern Hand-Knotted Silk and Viscose Rug

Mother-of-pearl is the nearest thing to how this rug behaves: a cream ground in silk and viscose that turns nacreous from one angle and soft and matt from another, with a turquoise-centered medallion and a black outer frame.

01Knot by knot, by hand

Hand-knotted in China, 171 × 243 cm (5'7" × 8'0"). A single piece. The medallion is small for the field it sits in, and its turquoise is the only cool color on the rug, which is what lets it hold the center.

02The tone of the ground

Around it, floral motifs in cream and beige interlock closely enough that ground and drawing are nearly the same value, so you read them by sheen rather than by contrast. Then the black frame arrives and does what black always does, which is draw a hard line and make everything inside it look more deliberate.

03The mark of slow weaving

Turquoise against black is a pairing borrowed from tilework, and it still holds. Silk and viscose together, knotted by hand in China at a count in the hundreds of thousands. Both fibers are filament-smooth, which is why the pile is so thin and why the face reflects rather than absorbs. Thinness has a practical side: a low pile leaves dust little depth to settle into, and the rug is easy to lift and shake out.

04How it feels underfoot

It also gives less cushioning underfoot than a wool rug of the same footprint. Take it to a rug cleaner when it needs more than a vacuum. Hand-knotted in China at a very high knot count.
