On the surface: Wool. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Classic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is blue.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Pale blue bleeding into beige across seven square meters
Months at the loom and knots numbering in the tens of thousands stand behind this piece: a hand-knotted rug in wool over cotton, 243 × 294 cm (8'0" × 9'8") — a little over seven square meters — with Oushak motifs drawn in soft outline across a pale blue field that runs into beige. The blue is the color of a summer evening after the heat has gone out of it, cool without being cold, and the beige mixed into it keeps the whole surface from reading as a solid block.
Motifs are set with rounded rather than sharp contours, so the pattern reveals itself gradually — the longer the rug is in a room the more of it you see. There is nothing showy in the drawing.
Against walnut or solid timber furniture the neutral transitions in the field pick up the wood and settle beside it. Knotted entirely by hand in India from natural cotton and wool, one loop at a time, over months. The knot count is what holds the composition together at this scale, and it is also what makes a rug of this size lie flat and stay square.
Wool is the surface and cotton the foundation, stated separately because they do different jobs. It is easy to keep clean day to day; for its long life it wants professional attention rather than domestic treatments.
At just under seven and a half square meters it will sit under a full seating group with room to spare. Hand-knotted in India from cotton and wool, over months at the loom. 243 × 294 cm (8'0" × 9'8"), roughly 7.15 m². Wool pile on a cotton foundation. Faded gray-blue field with beige and cream motifs in soft outline. Knots in the tens of thousands, which is why the drawing holds at this size. Sits comfortably under a seating group, a large dining table or in a wide bedroom. Simple daily care; professional cleaning for anything more. Classical Oushak drawing with the volume turned down, which is why it works in rooms that would refuse an actual antique.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
