Cream Floral Handwoven Wool Rug, Emirgân Series

Small flowers, drawn fine and set at intervals rather than massed — that is the entire surface of this Emirgân Series rug, a handwoven piece in wool and viscose on a cream ground. It was tied in the Aegean region of Türkiye and the fringes were braided by hand at the end.

01Reading the motif

One piece. Cream is the point of the series, and the flowers exist to give it something to do. The drawing is classical in its bones and contemporary in how sparingly it has been used, so the rug never becomes the subject of a room, only its floor.

02What Wool does

Where the viscose runs, the flowers pick up light and separate slightly from the wool around them, which is what keeps a pale rug from going blank. Wool and viscose together: wool for the wear, viscose for the silk-like finish on the pattern.

03At the loom in in Türkiye

Aegean workshops have been knotting for generations and their density standards are what the house buys on. The fringes were not machine-serged. They were braided individually, by hand, after the rug came off the loom — the kind of detail that costs an hour and shows for thirty years. Professional washing keeps the cream where it started.
