On the surface: Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Classic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is white, cream in the ground.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Rows of flowers on cream, 483 cm of red-edged runner
Nearly five meters of it — 78 × 483 cm (2'7" × 15'10") — a length most houses cannot use and a few need badly. This is a Mahal series runner, knotted by hand in wool, cream, with orderly rows of flower motifs and a red border down both sides, made in Pakistan over a cotton foundation.
There is one of it at this length. Over that distance a pattern has to be regular or it falls apart, and the flowers here are set in even rows rather than scattered — the drawing stays legible from either end, and there is no point along the length where it looks like a different rug. Red at the edges does the framing.
Cream in the middle keeps a corridor of this length from feeling like a tunnel, and the ivory-to-honey drift across the field is what stops five meters of pale ground from going dead. Green and earth tones appear inside the flowers and nowhere else. It was woven in Pakistan by weavers holding to the Anatolian double-knot tradition, one knot at a time over nearly five meters.
The face is entirely wool, dense enough for a hallway that is used every day; the foundation is cotton, and a modest quantity of synthetic yarn is worked into it, which on a piece this long is what stops it wandering out of true.
Yarn colored by hand does not repeat exactly, and on a rug this size that is visible: the cream runs from ivory at one end toward honey at the other. Professional washing, and get help lifting it. Knotted by hand in Pakistan in the Anatolian double-knot tradition. All-wool face; cotton foundation with a modest synthetic content for stability. Cream field, flower motifs in even rows, a red border on both long sides. 78 × 483 cm (2'7" × 15'10") — a genuinely long corridor, a foyer, a gallery landing. Hand-dyed yarn: the cream drifts from ivory to honey down the length. Narrow and dense, which is the right build for constant traffic. Rare in the trade: most halls this long are covered with two rugs and a gap. Professional washing.
One runner. A hall of that length deserves one continuous piece, and one continuous piece is the hard thing to find.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
