On the surface: Wool. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Classic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is white, cream in the ground.
This rug is woven in Pakistan. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Fine flowers on cream inside a black border, 487 cm long
A black border around a cream field is a hard edge to pull off, and it is what defines this piece: a hand-knotted runner in wool, Mahal series, 84 × 487 cm (2'9" × 16'0"), fine flower motifs on pale cream, enclosed by a black band worked with gold and red.
Made in Pakistan; wool above, cotton below. One of one. Black borders were never common in Oushak drawing, and there is a reason: black eats detail. Here the band is given its own gold and red figures so it stays a pattern rather than a void, and the effect at nearly five meters is a long bright field held between two dark rails.
The cream inside is worked in fine, small-scale flowers, which is the correct scale for a rug this narrow — anything bigger would crowd it. Ivory in daylight, light beige in the evening, with red and green nuances surfacing in the border as the light drops. Master weavers in Pakistan made it, working a dense, tightly packed knot along the whole length.
What your foot meets is wool. The structure underneath is cotton, plus a fractional synthetic content, put there because a rug 487 cm long and 84 cm wide has almost no width to hold itself straight with.
Every yarn in it was dyed by hand, which is why the cream field is not one flat tone and why the black reads slightly differently at the two ends. It should be washed by a professional; at this size that is not a decision but a logistics problem. Hand-knotted in Pakistan at a dense, tightly packed knot count. Wool surface; cotton structure with a fractional synthetic content. Pale cream field with fine flower motifs; black border worked in gold and red. 84 × 487 cm (2'9" × 16'0") — long halls, foyers, corridors that run the depth of a house. Hand-dyed yarns, so neither the cream nor the black is uniform end to end. Thin, hard-wearing and firm underfoot. The black band carries its own gold and red drawing so it does not read as a gap. Professional washing.
A single runner. It draws a straight dark line down a floor, and a house with a long hall in it is either improved by that or not; there is no middle result.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
