Brown Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Harem Series

Burgundy, cream, gold-yellow and pale green, balanced across classical Uşak drawing on a brown ground: that is the Harem-series rug here, 220 × 285 cm (7'3" × 9'4"). Çınar Halı knotted it in Türkiye, in first-shearing fleece out of Erzurum worked together with silk.

01The geography of the weave

One of one. Uşak, which English has spelled Oushak for two hundred years, is a town in western Anatolia whose rugs were being exported to Europe by the sixteenth century and copied there soon after.

02Up close to the pattern

The drawing on this piece is that tradition, unabbreviated: large forms in the field, a border that repeats without ever quite repeating, and the four colors distributed so the eye keeps moving.

03Color, by the light

Burgundy carries the weight, brown holds the temperature, and the gold catches whatever light reaches the floor. It suits the sort of room that already has a bookcase in it. First-shearing wool is the fleece taken from an animal's first clip; it keeps more of its natural oil and therefore more of its shine than later shearings, and it is what gives the series its hand.

04What the yarn is

Silk enters the pile with it. The knot is the symmetrical Turkish knot, tied over two neighboring warps, at a density that decides both the sharpness of the drawing and the years of work it can absorb.

05The mark of slow weaving

Fewer looms attempt this class each season, and none of it will forgive a domestic wash — take it to a washer who understands what silk in a pile means.
