Beige Vintage-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Retro Series

Look at it from one side of the room and the surface is bright; from the other it goes dark and matt. The reversal was engineered, by washing and dyeing after the weaving: Retro Series Handwoven Vintage-Pattern Beige Rug, 152 × 200 cm (5'0" × 6'7"), wool pile on a cotton warp, classical Oushak motifs redrawn in modern beiges. The pattern underneath is old — the same Oushak forms that have been woven in western Anatolia for centuries — but the coloring is not.

01Color that shifts through the day

Special wash and dye treatments have flattened the contrast and pushed everything toward beige, so what survives is the drawing's shape and not its original palette. In practice this means the rug behaves like a plain one from a distance and a patterned one at close range.

02Coming off the loom

It goes with modern and classical furniture equally, which is uncommon and mostly a function of that muted color. Woven in Afghanistan with the double knot, which gives a high knot count and a tight back.

03What Wool does

Wool over a cotton warp keeps the fabric thin without making it flimsy, with a trace of recycled synthetic yarn worked into the skeleton for strength, and a thin rug of this size will slide under a door and lie flat against a threshold.

What it will do is show the direction of the light more than most rugs, so its appearance in your room depends on where the windows are, and it is worth trying it in more than one orientation before settling it.
