On the surface: Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Authentic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is navy blue, blue.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Octagons and cornered suns on navy, 280 × 360 cm of wool
Eight-sided figures, many-cornered sunbursts and forked plant forms rise off a navy ground: this is a hand-knotted wool rug from the Mihman series, 280 × 360 cm (9'2" × 11'10"), with a red border around it and roughly 2,000 knots in every 10 cm².
Wool pile, cotton foundation, one piece. The navy is dark without being heavy, and the motifs are set at a steady interval that carries the eye along the field rather than stopping it at a center.
Nothing here is drawn softly. Colors are saturated, the transitions between them are cut clean, and the shapes hold their outline at a distance. The red border is the warmth in the piece; it is also what tells you where the field ends, since the field itself would otherwise go on.
Traditional Anatolian forms meeting blocks of strong color is the whole idea of the series. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan. Wool makes up the entire surface, and beneath it sits a cotton base carrying a trace of recycled synthetic yarn for strength, and the house says so instead of hiding it.
At about 2,000 knots per 10 cm² the drawing stays legible at the smallest scale, and the piece took months on the loom to reach that count. Vacuum in the direction of the pile and leave anything wetter than that to a rug washer. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan for the Mihman series. Wool pile; cotton foundation with a trace of recycled synthetic yarn for strength. Approximately 2,000 knots per 10 cm², which is what holds the small detail. Octagons, sunburst forms and forked plant figures on navy, inside a red border. 280 × 360 cm (9'2" × 11'10") — a large salon or a reception floor. Months of knotting per piece. Send it to a rug washer rather than wetting it at home. A single piece, and not repeatable. A rug this size decides a room before the furniture does, and this one decides it in favor of color.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
