Cream Floral Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Ottoman Series

At 209 × 294 cm (6'10" × 9'8") this is a salon rug, large enough to take a seating group whole with all four sofa legs on it. Knotted by hand in Türkiye out of first-shearing Erzurum fleece, on the double Turkish knot, cream and beige with gold through an Oushak-derived flower pattern.

01Reading the motif

A single piece. A rug this size changes a room's proportions before anyone looks at the pattern. The flowers are drawn open rather than dense, which is the right decision at this scale — a packed field nearly ten feet across would be exhausting.

02Which tone on the ground

Against dark wood and stone the cream reads as light coming up off the floor; in an already pale room it settles and warms instead, and the gold is what keeps it from going cold. Erzurum fleece taken at the first shearing is the wool this region is known for: soft, bright, and hard-wearing enough to knot.

03The Wool on the surface

The whole rug is wool, with no silk anywhere in it, and the double knot is tied around two warps in the Anatolian manner, which is slower than the alternative and stands up better under furniture.

04The tone of the ground

It goes with walnut, and with blue and green in the smaller things around it. Only a washer who knows hand-knotted work should take it on.
