On the surface: Wool, Cotton. Writing the yarn onto the spec sheet is saying in advance how the rug will age.
Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is red.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
One red carried at several depths, 202 × 300 cm of wool
Knot by knot, by hand, with no pattern to hide behind: a plain red wool rug hand-knotted for the Pinhan series, 202 × 300 cm (6'8" × 9'10"), the red running through several depths of one color, a wool surface over a cotton foundation, woven in Afghanistan for Halıcızade.
Only one of it exists. Red is the hardest color to leave undecorated, because nothing breaks it up and it never stops being noticed. What saves this one is that it is not a single red. The tones travel from warm to deep across the field, so the surface has movement in it at close range and reads as one strong plane from the door.
Beside neutral or pale furniture it defines the room outright. It is a color to choose deliberately rather than to try out. Craftsmen tie the double knot across the full width, and a plain field is the least forgiving thing to weave: any drift in tension or in dye shows up at once, because there is no ornament to distract from it.
Wool covers the surface. Cotton and a small measure of synthetic yarn make the frame beneath, declared here as the house declares it. For a deep clean it goes out to a washer. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan with the double knot, for Halıcızade. Red at several depths across a field with no pattern in it. Wool surface; cotton foundation carrying a small measure of synthetic yarn. An undecorated field shows any drift in tension or dye, which makes it hard to weave well. 202 × 300 cm (6'8" × 9'10"), enough for a seating group or a dining table. A red this strong will set the palette of the room rather than fit into it. Deep cleaning goes out to a rug washer. It is the sort of rug people buy after they stop trying to make a room look neutral.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
