02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Woven by hand

In a flat weave the weft is packed down by hand on every row, and the density follows the arm of the weaver. The slight waver across the surface comes from that.

02

Wool yarn

The air trapped between wool fibers holds heat and keeps the cold of the floor from your feet. The same air balances humidity in summer.

03

Modern pattern

Modern pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is multicolor in the ground.

04

Türkiye weaving tradition

This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.

Terra Potta Handwoven Wool Kilim, Studio Potato — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

Studio Potato works with women weaving in workshops across Türkiye, and Terra Potta is one of the designs they put on the loom: a handwoven wool kilim, flat and pileless, held here in 120 × 170 cm (3'11" × 5'7") and 160 × 210 cm (5'3" × 6'11"). Every piece comes out slightly different from the last. A kilim has no knots in it.

01The origin of the pattern

The pattern is made by the weft threads themselves as they pass over and under the warp, packed down until the warp disappears — which is why a kilim is thin, why it is the same on both faces, and why its shapes have to be geometric rather than curved.

02The geography of the weave

The name plays on terracotta, and what is drawn is modern instead of traditional — abstract and multicolored, where an Anatolian village kilim would carry small repeating motifs. On a balcony or in a conservatory that flatness is an advantage, because there is no pile to hold damp. It is designed by the studio and woven by hand on the loom, which is why the studio says openly that the kilim arriving will not match the photograph exactly.

03Color that shifts through the day

Shapes shift a centimeter, a color runs a shade warmer, an edge takes a slight wave. That is what a person at a loom produces, and it is the difference between this and a printed rug. There is no pile to absorb anything, so a spill sits on the surface for a moment before it goes in; take it up at once.

04Coming off the loom

Send it out for professional washing rather than putting it in water at home. Handwoven on a loom in Türkiye by women working with Studio Potato. Wool, flat-woven with no pile, and the same pattern on both faces. Two sizes held: 120 × 170 cm (3'11" × 5'7") and 160 × 210 cm (5'3" × 6'11"). An abstract, multicolored drawing rather than a village repeat. Thin enough for a balcony, a conservatory, an office or an entrance. Each piece varies from the photograph; the studio says so first. Professional washing. Reversible means a kilim has two working lives in it, and the second one starts the day you turn it over.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
