01From ground to pile

Wool and silk knotted by hand over a cotton foundation in Pakistan, 234 × 303 cm (7'8" × 9'11"). One piece. The vintage effect is in the drawing and not in a wash applied afterward. Motifs sit softly on the ground, as though years of sun had taken the sharpness off them and left the structure intact, and the brick orange only comes forward where the silk threads are — which means the pattern brightens and dims as anyone walks around it.

02After the color

Against dark wood and brass fittings the red goes formal. Under a dining table it does the thing red does best and makes a room look occupied even when nobody is in it. Pakistani weavers knot these by hand.

03What Wool does

Wool builds the ground and takes the wear; silk goes only into the raised parts of the pattern, where the shine earns what it costs. The knot is doubled — the technique the series is built on, and the reason a rug this large stays flat and holds its color under a table that gets used. Some Ayan designs are sold nowhere else.

04A question of size

The series runs to medium and large sizes because that is what it was drawn for. Washing is a job for a professional. Knotted entirely by hand in Pakistan, over a cotton foundation. Wool in the ground; silk in the raised parts of the pattern. Faded classical drawing in brick orange over deep red. Doubled knots, close-set, which is why it stays flat under furniture.
