On the surface: Wool, Bamboo, Cotton. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Modern pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a blue, turquoise ground.
This rug is woven in India. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Gray stripes at the ends, turquoise between, 172 × 238 cm
The house does not recommend this one for a kitchen, and it is worth putting that first. Everywhere else it does well: a hand-knotted rug, 172 × 238 cm (5'8" × 7'10"), a plain turquoise field edged with horizontal dark gray stripes, tied entirely by hand in India, with wool worked in among the cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose. Turquoise is a color that will not hold still. In daylight it runs toward a bright sky blue; in a dim room it drops into something deeper and quieter, closer to teal.
The gray stripes at the edges do the job a border does without any of a border's ornament — they give the field an edge to stop at and keep a strong color from bleeding into the floor around it.
The ground itself is left plain, which at this size takes some nerve. The cellulose yarns give it the silky hand — cotton, bamboo viscose and plain viscose together — while the wool is there for wear, and the wool is what will still be underfoot in fifteen years. Thickness is ordinary, so it lies flat against most floors and takes a door swing.
Kitchens are the exception the house names, and the reason is simple: oil and turquoise go badly together, and a grease mark on cellulose is not something a wash reliably lifts. Vacuum on suction; professional washing. Knotted by hand in India, in limited numbers for Halıcızade. Cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose for the hand; wool for the wear. Plain turquoise field with horizontal dark gray stripes at the edges. Turquoise goes bright sky blue in daylight and near-teal in low light. 172 × 238 cm (5'8" × 7'10"), at ordinary rug thickness. Not for a kitchen: grease and these plant yarns are a poor match. Vacuum on suction; professional washing. One of a limited run made for this house. Strong color on a floor is a commitment people either regret in a month or never think about again.
There is rarely a middle.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
