On the surface: Wool, Acrylic/Synthetic. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Traditional pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads gray, cream.
This rug is made in India. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Plain from standing, damask from a chair: knotted wool, gray
Damask began on the silk looms of Damascus and works by reflection — one large foliate figure, mirrored and repeated until it fills a field. Here it is carried by a hand-knotted wool rug in gray, 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), tied in India from wool with a synthetic yarn run in beside it for wear. The figure is set at a large scale, which is what stops a classical drawing from crowding six square meters of floor. Damask has no medallion and no border to speak of; it is an all-over pattern, so it reads as a change of surface rather than a change of color, and it will take a room of any shape without needing to be centered.
From standing height the field looks close to plain. From a chair on the far side it resolves, and the rug turns out to have had a pattern in it the whole time. It was knotted by hand in India.
Hand-knotting means every row of pile is tied onto the warp and cut by a person, which is why the drawing shows on the back as clearly as on the face — the quickest way there is to tell a knotted rug from a printed one.
The yarn is wool with a synthetic thread alongside it, and Halıcızade states it rather than letting the rug pass as all-wool. A pale ground at this size shows its walking lanes first, so give it a half-turn each spring.
Send it out for washing. Hand-knotted in India, in wool with a synthetic yarn worked in alongside. An all-over damask figure in gray over a cream ground, drawn at a large scale. 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10") — six square meters, a full living-room size. The pattern is legible on the reverse, as it is on any knotted piece. Classical in drawing, modern in scale: it does not need period furniture around it. Rotate it every spring so the wear spreads across the whole field. Professional washing. Two pieces are held in this size. Damask was a pattern for cloth centuries before it was a pattern for floors, and putting it into knotted wool is the thing that makes it survivable underfoot.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
