Cream Framed Floral Hand-Knotted Mohair Rug

The Mohair Series is named for its fiber: Angora goat hair, spun and knotted like wool but not wool. This is a hand-knotted piece from Türkiye, 119 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11"), a cream ground with Oushak motifs and flowers held inside a drawn frame, burgundy and pale green through the pattern.

01The origin of the pattern

One piece. The frame gathers the drawing instead of repeating around it, and inside it the Oushak motifs and the flower forms are blended rather than kept apart — that mixing is unusual, and it is the most interesting decision in the design.

02The tone of the ground

Burgundy and pale green do all the coloring, and on a cream ground they stay legible without pushing; nothing in this palette shouts across a room. It was knotted by hand, tuft by tuft, in Türkiye.

03How many centimeters, which room

At 119 × 180 cm it is a small rug carrying a large rug's amount of drawing, which means it works in front of a bed or a desk and looks crowded set down alone in the middle of an open floor. The fiber is soft and presses flat easily under a palm, and a pile that soft is one to treat carefully.
