Blue Abstract-Pattern Handwoven Wool Kilim, Drop Series

A kilim is a flat weave with no pile, so any relief in it has to be built out of the weave itself — which is what happens here. A handwoven kilim from the Drop series in blue and cream, woven on traditional looms in India from cotton and wool for Halıcızade, with the abstract motifs standing slightly above the flat ground. Blue and cream pass into one another in soft steps instead of meeting at a hard line, and the raised sections catch light while the flat ground stays matt.

The effect is close to sky reflected on water, which is the comparison the house itself reaches for and which the surface earns. Because the relief is structural rather than printed, it reads from directly above as texture and from across a room as pattern — two different rugs depending on where you stand. Cotton and wool are worked together on the loom; the cotton gives the flat weave its stability and the wool gives it its hand.

01What it sits well with

A kilim has no pile to hide anything in, so it wipes down and it dries fast, which suits a room where a glass occasionally goes over. What it will not do is soften a floor the way a knotted rug does — it is thin by nature, and on a hard floor it wants a pad under it.

03Knot by knot, by hand

Denser passages of weft are packed in where the motif sits, so those areas stand slightly above the flat ground around them. Nothing is printed on, glued down or cut in afterward. Kilims move house well. They roll into nothing, weigh little, and come out of the tube looking the same as they went in.
