A turquoise that leans green, double-knotted in Afghanistan

Classic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a blue ground.
This rug is woven in Afghanistan. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
A turquoise that leans green, double-knotted in Afghanistan
Turquoise is the color, and it is worth saying at once that it leans green: the ground of this Şahzade Oushak-pattern rug sits between the two, nearer a soft sea-green by day and nearer blue under lamps.
Knotted by hand in Afghanistan, wool surface, 177 × 234 cm (5'10" × 7'8"). A single rug. Over that ground go the Oushak motifs the series is built on — the western Anatolian vocabulary of open forms and long stems, reduced and regularized so the pattern carries at a distance. The design descends from the Pazyryk rug, the oldest knotted pile ever found, a lineage the Şahzade series states openly and which explains the framed, bordered arrangement rather than an all-over one.
A color this specific rewards a plain room: white walls, oak, one dark chair, and the rug is doing all the work by itself. Afghanistan has been knotting rugs for as long as anywhere on earth, and this one was made there by hand, knot by knot, doubled in the way that gives the series its density.
The surface is wool with nothing mixed into it. The base is cotton, and a recycled synthetic thread is spun into it in small quantity, which is a fact about the structure and not about the part you walk on. The pile is cropped low and packed close, so the surface stays even and holds very little.
Wash it professionally, and only professionally. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan, with every knot doubled. Wool pile; cotton base with recycled synthetic thread spun in for strength. A turquoise ground that leans sea-green by day and blue by lamplight. Oushak motifs in a framed composition descended from the Pazyryk rug. 177 × 234 cm (5'10" × 7'8") — sitting rooms, bedrooms, offices. Low, closely packed pile, easy to vacuum. Professional washing. Turquoise is bought on impulse and lived with for decades, so look at it once in the morning and once at night before deciding.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
