Burgundy Afghan Hand-Knotted Wool Khamyap Rug

Burgundy behaves like two colors in the same room — nearly black where the light does not reach it, clear red where it does — and at 168 × 239 cm (5'6" × 7'10") there is enough of it here to watch both happen at once.

01The mark of slow weaving

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in wool, with cotton and synthetic listed in the build, in the classical Afghan drawing the house files as Khamyap. One piece. The classical Afghan field is a repeat rather than a composition: one figure, set out on a regular grid, running the length of the rug and stopped by a border at both ends.

02What the years do

It is an unfashionable structure and a durable one, because a repeat has no focal point to be blocked by a table and no center to be walked out of shape. Burgundy over a repeating field is the most forgiving floor a busy room can have, and it is why this combination has outlasted every trend that has passed through the trade. Knotted by hand in Afghanistan, the pile tied row by row onto a cotton warp and cut back to an even height afterwards.

The declaration includes a synthetic component and the house prints it, which is the correct thing to do and rarer than it should be. One caution about the color rather than the construction: burgundy photographs badly and will look flatter and browner on a screen than it does in a lit room, so judge it from the piece itself if you can.

03Where the Border comes from
