Antep Handwoven Wool Rug, Root-Dyed, 90+ Years Old

It is more than ninety years old and it looks it, which is worth saying before anything else. A handwoven wool rug from Antep in southeastern Türkiye, root-dyed, red-grounded, drawn with Anatolian motifs across the field, and it measures 4'5" × 7'11" — 134 × 241 cm in metric. Ninety years puts this at the top of the semi-antique band and within sight of antique, which the trade sets at a hundred. None of these terms is issued or checked by anybody; they are shorthand used between dealers and they have never been anything else.

What is verifiable is the dyeing. Root dye means madder, indigo and local plant sources rather than synthetics, and the giveaway is how the colors have aged — plant dyes lose intensity while keeping their hue, so a ninety-year-old madder red is paler than it was and still unmistakably red. Wool throughout, in the way of Anatolian village weaving, where the sheep, the spinning and the loom were all within a few kilometers of each other.

A rug of this age has been walked on for most of a century: expect thinning where the traffic went, unevenness in the pile, and a color balance that has moved further in some places than others. That is the condition of the object, not a complaint about it. Cleaning is for a specialist in old textiles. Does root dyeing mean the colors will not fade? No. Plant dyes fade, and this rug has faded. What distinguishes them is the manner of it: madder and indigo lose strength while holding their hue, so an old plant-dyed red stays red as it lightens, where many early synthetic reds drift toward gray or brown instead.
