Multicolor Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Taşpınar Village Rug

Fifty years in a chest, and none of them on a floor. This is a Taşpınar village rug from Aksaray province, hand-knotted in wool, 206 × 363 cm (6'9" × 11'11") — seven and a half square meters, the largest thing of its kind here — multicolored, and stored rather than used for its whole life.

01Knot by knot, by hand

A single rug. Taşpınar is a village that has lent its name to a whole class of rug, and the composition is a medallion with corner pieces, drawn in straight lines and repeated at every size the looms make.

02The origin of the pattern

On a rug this large the drawing has room to be generous: the medallion is wide, the corner pieces are complete rather than cropped, and the main border runs deep enough to be read from across a room.

03The mark of slow weaving

The colors were never coordinated, which is the point of rengarenk — they are whatever the household had dyed. Wool makes the pile and wool makes the foundation, tied by hand in Türkiye. What makes this one unusual is not the pattern but the condition: sandık eskisi means it went into a bride's chest and stayed there, so the pile has never been laid over by traffic and the tips have not been abraded. Fifty years is what the house says, which is the trade's semi-antique band, and no certificate exists for that word or any of the others.

04A question of size

One practical warning: a rug of this weight and size is a two-person lift and it will need professional washing that most local cleaners cannot physically handle.
