The story of this rug

Seventy years and more, and it has spent most of them folded: a hand-knotted Anatolian rug from Kırşehir in central Türkiye, 106 × 176 cm (3'6" × 5'9"), wool throughout and colored with root dyes.

01Reading the motif

A red field, and one of it. Kırşehir sits between Ankara and Kayseri and weaves in the central Anatolian manner: strong red grounds, drawing built out of hooks and stepped forms, borders that repeat one small figure the whole way round.

02Which tone on the ground

Root dyeing is what gives the red its behavior. Madder does not hold a single flat value across a whole rug, so the field moves between a brick tone and a deeper one in horizontal passes where the weaver started a fresh batch of yarn.

03Knot by knot, by hand

The trade calls that drift abrash, and on an old rug it is the thing to look for rather than the thing to forgive. Wool pile on a wool foundation, knotted in a village and not in a workshop, which shows at the sides: the width is not identical at both ends, and the drawing wanders where it was carried in the weaver's memory. Sandık eskisi is the Turkish for what happened to it — made for a dowry chest and kept in one, brought out for guests and put away again.

04What the yarn is

That is how a wool rug reaches this age with its pile still standing, and it is also why it comes with creases that want a few weeks lying flat. Washing goes to somebody who handles old rugs. Hand-knotted in Kırşehir, central Türkiye; wool throughout, pile and foundation both. Over seventy years old.

05The mark of slow weaving

The trade would call that semi-antique; no body certifies the term. Root-dyed: madder red, banding lighter and darker across the field. 106 × 176 cm (3'6" × 5'9"). Kept folded in a dowry chest rather than laid down, which preserved the pile. Fold lines come with it and flatten out over some weeks. Cleaning by a specialist in old rugs, not a general cleaning service. One piece. It has already outlasted the house it was woven for, and on the evidence of its condition it will outlast the next one too.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
