Authentic pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a colorful ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Long and narrow the way Sivrihisar wove them: 175 × 370
Three meters seventy long and a meter seventy-five across: a handwoven kilim from Sivrihisar, flat-woven in wool over a cotton warp and worked end to end in the Anatolian motif vocabulary, 175 × 370 cm (5'9" × 12'2").
Sivrihisar is a district of Eskişehir, on the road between Ankara and the Aegean, and it has woven kilims for a very long time. One piece, and an old one. The proportion is the first thing to reckon with.
At six and a half square meters this is a large floor covering, but the length runs to more than double the width, and modern furniture is not laid out around that shape. It came out of a house where a room was dressed with two or three flatweaves laid parallel rather than one rectangle in the middle, and it still does that job better than any other.
Down a long hall, or along one side of a room with the seating gathered on it, the proportion stops being awkward and becomes the reason to have it. Wool wefts beaten down over cotton warps. The cotton does the structural work — it takes the tension on the loom and holds the length straight over three and a half meters, which sheep's wool alone would not do at this span — and the wool carries every color you can see.
Colors here are set against one another at full strength, with no single dye put in charge of the rest. Halıcızade files it with the older and scarcer stock, so expect an edge that is not dead straight and a dye that has drifted.
Washing belongs to a kilim cleaner, not to a machine. Flat-woven by hand in Sivrihisar, a district of Eskişehir province in Türkiye. Wool wefts on a cotton warp — the cotton holds the length, the wool carries the color. 175 × 370 cm (5'9" × 12'2"), roughly six and a half square meters. Anatolian motifs across the full length, in strong unblended colors. Better along a hall or down one side of a room than centered under furniture. An older piece: slight waver at the edges, some drift in the dyes. Cleaning by a kilim specialist. One of one.
There is no second length of this. Kilims of this length stopped being made when rooms stopped being this shape, which is the whole reason to take one when it appears.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
