Black Anatolian-Pattern Handwoven Wool Kilim

A handwoven wool kilim on a black ground, 120 × 180 cm (3'11" × 5'11"), with Anatolian geometric motifs running in horizontal bands across it in red, orange, yellow and green. A kilim is flat-woven rather than knotted, so it carries no pile and lies thin. Woven in Türkiye, one piece. Black is an unusual ground for an Anatolian flatweave and it changes what every other color does: red goes hotter against it, yellow stops looking pale, and the green begins to read almost as a third warm color.

01Which tone on the ground

The bands advance up the kilim in sequence, four colors taking their turn, so the eye travels along it instead of settling in a middle. Inside the bands is the old geometric alphabet of village weaving — hooks, diamonds, running borders — each drawn small and repeated. Woven entirely in wool on Turkish looms, with no pile whatsoever.

02The origin of the pattern

The pattern is the weft itself, beaten down over the warp until the warp disappears. That is what a flatweave is, and it is why a kilim weighs a fraction of a knotted rug covering the same floor and can be picked up and shaken out.

03When you touch it

Thinness is the trade: underfoot it is firm rather than soft, and on a polished floor it will slide without a pad beneath it. Professional washing keeps the black from going gray.
