Cream Frame-Pattern Hand-Knotted Silk and Viscose Rug

At 76 × 122 cm (2'6" × 4'0") this is a small rug carrying a full classical composition: a detailed medallion on a red ground at the center, layered in blue and beige, held inside a cream frame drawn with turquoise and gold.

01From ground to pile

Hand-knotted in cotton, viscose and silk in China. One of one. The center reads like a garden seen from above — the layers of blue and beige interleave closely enough that the pattern keeps opening the longer it is looked at.

02After the color

The frame around it does more than close the edge: the turquoise and gold worked into the cream set the character of the whole piece, and without them the red would simply be loud. Symmetry holds everything in place.

03What Silk does

The surface plays with light through the day and moves between bright and matt as the sun does. Cotton, viscose and silk together, tied entirely by hand — hundreds of thousands of knots in a rug this size, which is what fine drawing at small scale requires. The pile is thin and the whole piece is light.

Red on the floor brings warmth into a room, and the blue and beige stop it short of dominating. At this size it works in an entrance, in front of a cabinet, or as something to give.
