On the surface: Wool, Silk. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Traditional pattern. Because the pattern comes from inside the weave, it can be followed from the back as well. Built on a yellow ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Oushak drawing boxed inside its own border, knotted in Anatolia
Cream Classic Frame-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, 205 × 266 cm (6'9" × 8'9"): a pale cream field with Oushak drawing set inside a frame — Anatolian hand-knotting, a wool field with silk carried through some of the figures. The frame is the structure of the design and everything else answers to it.
One piece. A frame pattern puts a bordered rectangle inside the borders, so the rug has two edges instead of one and the field it encloses reads as a panel rather than as open ground. Anatolian weavers have used the arrangement for centuries because it makes a large rug legible: from a doorway you see the frame, from the middle of the room you see what is inside it.
The cream here is light enough that a south-facing room will bounce daylight off it, which is the argument for putting this one in a bright space rather than a dark one. Every knot was tied in Anatolia; the field is wool and silk takes some of the figures, at a tight count that gives the frame its clean edges — a soft-edged frame ruins the whole arrangement. Silk here works less for shine than for definition, since it takes dye differently and holds a line where wool blurs one.
Hand-knotting in Anatolia is a shrinking trade and rugs of this size in it are fewer every year. A cream field shows a spill, so deal with one quickly and leave the washing to a workshop. Anatolian hand-knotting; a wool field with silk in some of the figures. 205 × 266 cm (6'9" × 8'9") — a living room, under a seating group. Cream field with a framed Oushak composition and warm beige tones. Dense knotting, which is what keeps the frame edges clean. Best in a bright room, where the pale ground returns daylight. Suits classical wooden furniture, entrances and bedrooms. Shows spills; act quickly and send it out for washing. One piece. The frame pattern has outlasted every fashion that tried to replace it, and it will outlast the next one too.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
