Classic, Authentic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Çanakkale deseni, köy tezgâhından çıkma yün bir halı
Red Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Çanakkale Rug: a red ground carrying geometric figures in dark blue and cream, hand-knotted in wool at 126 × 200 cm (4'2" × 6'7") on the northern Aegean coast of Türkiye.
The house files it under classical rather than tribal, and there is one of it. Çanakkale weaving sits on the seam between two traditions. The province looks across the Dardanelles at Europe and back at the Anatolian interior, and its rugs take the interior's geometry but organize it more formally than a nomadic piece would — the border is regular, the field is properly framed, and the figures repeat on a grid rather than scattering.
Dark blue does the outlining against the red, and cream is used sparingly, mostly to keep two reds from running into each other. Wool right through, tied by hand in Türkiye. The color across the field steps between lighter and darker reds in horizontal bands where the weaver moved from one dyed lot of yarn to the next; the trade calls that banding abrash, and it is the reliable sign of yarn dyed in small quantities rather than bought by the sack.
Nothing about it is a flaw. The rug is old enough to have been used, and the pile shows it along the traffic lines. It should be cleaned away from the house. Hand-knotted in the Çanakkale region, on the northern Aegean coast of Türkiye. The pile is wool and so is everything under it. Red field with dark blue outlining and sparing cream, figures set on a grid. More formally composed than a nomadic rug, with a regular framing border. Abrash — banding between dye lots — runs across the red field. 126 × 200 cm (4'2" × 6'7") — a small sitting room or a wide entry. Used, with the pile lying along the lines it was walked. Washing by a rug specialist; not a domestic job. Put it under a low table and the grid gives the room a floor plan it did not have before.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
