The story of this rug

The series name stays in Turkish, and it carries a meaning: şal is the word for shawl, and this family of drawings descends from woven shawls rather than from floor rugs. This is a handwoven wool piece in the Sivas Zara pattern, 88 × 155 cm (2'11" × 5'1"), multicolored, made in Türkiye. One of one. Zara is a district east of Sivas, in the high country of central-eastern Anatolia, and it lends its name to a group of weavings recognized by their drawing rather than by any single motif.

01The origin of the pattern

A shawl pattern works differently from a rug pattern: it is built to run in one direction and to be read as bands of ornament, so the şal family gives you nothing to line up in the middle and no corner-pieces to match.

02Knot by knot, by hand

Laid on a floor it keeps that logic, and the eye travels along the piece instead of settling in its center. Wool throughout, handwoven. The scale is what to be honest about — at 88 × 155 cm this is a piece for a bedside, an entrance or a spot in front of a desk, and it will look thin in front of a sofa. Hand-loomed work of this width also shifts slightly along its length; the two ends of a hand-woven rug are rarely the same measurement to the millimeter, and that is the method rather than a defect.
