Knotted by hand in India for Halıcızade. One piece. Tone on tone is difficult to weave and it is the reason to want this one. In daylight the gray inside the squares separates them and the grid is plain; after dark the field closes into a single navy and the geometry survives only as a change of texture. It is a rug that will behave like a plain one whenever you need it to.

02What the yarn is

Under pale upholstery the navy reads almost black; on light oak boards it goes back to being blue. The pile is a mixture and the mixture is deliberate: the cellulose yarns — cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose — carry the softness that bare feet notice, while wool gives the resilience that keeps a chair leg from leaving a permanent dent.

03The mark of slow weaving

It is woven at an everyday pile height rather than a deep one. This is not a kitchen rug; a pile like this catches crumbs and will not give them up.
