On the surface: Wool, Bamboo, Cotton. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is black.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Spirals that only the pale outlines keep out of the black
The geometry on this one spirals. Black Spiral Geometric Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10"), sets coiled figures in pale outline across a black ground, tied by hand in India, wool and bamboo viscose above and cotton below, and drawn for this house rather than bought in from a supplier. A spiral is an awkward thing to knot.
Every curve on a knotted rug is built out of steps, and the tighter the turn the more the weaver has to compensate, which is why most geometric rugs stay with straight rules and diamonds. Here the coils turn cleanly, and the pale contours around them are what keep them legible against black — without those outlines the pattern would vanish into the ground under any ordinary lamp. In daylight the whole surface lifts and the movement becomes obvious.
After dark it goes back to being a black floor with something happening on it. Cotton is the skeleton. The pile is wool, with bamboo viscose run through the motifs, and the viscose has a specific job: it takes light where wool absorbs it, so the drawing carries a low sheen the wool around it does not.
The knot count is high for a piece this size, which is what stops the coils going ragged at the turns. Black is the most demanding ground color to live with, since it shows lint and pale dust sooner than anything else, and pale furniture is what it was designed to stand under.
Dust it with a vacuum; when it needs more than that, it needs a workshop. Hand-knotted in India at high density: wool and bamboo viscose above a cotton base. Spiral geometric figures in pale outline across a black ground. Bamboo viscose puts a sheen on the motifs that the wool around them will not take. Daylight brings the pattern forward; lamplight sends it back into the black. Black shows pale dust and lint sooner than any other ground color. 200 × 300 cm (6'7" × 9'10") — a large living room, with the seating standing on it. Drawn for Halıcızade's own collection. Professional washing.
There is one of it. Against light oak and white walls it does what a black rug is bought to do, and it does not take long to notice that it is also drawn.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
