Gray Abstract Handwoven Bamboo Viscose Rug

The surface looks like a wall that has been repainted and worn back several times: gray and cream running together with no clean edge anywhere. It is a handwoven rug of bamboo viscose over cotton, 6'11" × 9'6" — 210 × 290 cm — made by hand in India. Because the tones were never fixed to begin with, daylight moves them. Morning finds the cream and the whole floor lifts; by late afternoon the grays close over and the rug reads several shades deeper than it did at breakfast.

01What the yarn is

Bamboo viscose lies on the surface and cotton carries the structure below it, and the whole thing is knotted by hand rather than run off a machine.

The hand is soft and quiet; footsteps land without much sound. Cellulose fibers are strong dry and weaker wet, so this is a rug that should never be scrubbed or soaked at home — it goes to a professional washer, and it will come back the color it left.
