Gray Vintage-Pattern Handwoven Wool Rug, Retro Series

Twelve and a half square meters is a rug you plan a room around: 303 × 416 cm (9'11" × 13'8"), handwoven in Afghanistan, wool over a cotton warp and tied with the double knot. The gray carries a faint green in it, and the vintage drawing surfaces only where the light lands. Nothing about it declares itself at first.

The pattern is faint and the tonal shifts are slow — the surface goes matt or bright according to where you stand, and the color pulls in whatever else is in the room instead of setting a note of its own.

02Where it sits in the house

That is the reason a rug like this works in a modern office and under a set of heavy classical furniture equally, which very few large rugs manage. Under a long dining table it will take twelve chairs without the drawing being lost beneath them. The double knot makes a tight back and a dense fabric, and dense is what a rug of this area has to be if it is to lie flat for decades.

03What Cotton does

Cotton in the warp keeps it thin for its size, so it will still meet a threshold, and a trace of recycled synthetic yarn is worked into the skeleton for strength. The brightness in the surface comes from yarn dyeing and a wash after weaving, not from the fiber alone.
