Blue and Orange Karabagh-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

The roses come first: full-blown Karabagh flowers in orange, red and cream, scattered over a blue field, and the rug carrying them is worked by hand in Afghanistan in wool, every knot doubled, at 170 × 244 cm (5'7" × 8'0").

01First contact

Dense enough that the surface feels packed under a thumb. A Halıcızade design, one piece of it. Karabagh flatweaves have used flowers and roses for hundreds of years, and what has been modernized here is the spacing rather than the drawing — the blossoms are held apart from one another so the blue can be seen between them, where an older piece would have crowded them edge to edge.

02Where the Border comes from

Orange carries the field and the border repeats it at half size. Beside English furniture, mahogany or anything with turned legs the rug reads traditional; put it in a plain room with a low sofa and it becomes the only ornament there is. The pile is wool throughout.

03What the yarn is

Beneath it, cotton does the structural work, with a small share of recycled synthetic thread included so the weave keeps its tension; surface and structure are two different fibers and only one of them is underfoot.

04The mark of slow weaving

Close knotting is what keeps the drawing legible at this scale, since roses this size would round off at every petal in a loose weave. It is a single rug at 170 × 244 cm, so if you are matching a pair, this is not the one.

05After the color

Professional washing only. Made by hand in Afghanistan, doubled knots, wool pile. Cotton base, with a small share of recycled synthetic thread for tension. Karabagh roses in orange, red and cream, spaced open across a blue field. A half-scale repeat of the field flowers runs through the border. 170 × 244 cm (5'7" × 8'0"), which suits a mid-sized sitting room or an office.
